French and German companies explore hydrogen opportunities in Essen
French hydrogen companies have visited their German counterparts in Essen with a view to strengthen cooperation.
City authorities headed by Lord Mayor of Essen Thomas Kufen stressed the importance of developing hydrogen technologies to facilitate the transition away from fossil fuels.
Representatives of 9 French companies and start-ups met with their counterparts from approximately 30 German companies operating as part of Essen’s hydrogen ecosystem.
The visit was organised by German and French companies, with Essen authorities noting that company representatives discussed international exchange and joint projects, among other.
Essen pointed out that density of hydrogen companies, research facilities and universities in the city creates a unique environment for innovation and cooperation, which attracts German and foreign companies.
Essen Development Agency (EWG) managing director Andre Boschem noted that development of hydrogen technologies “does not stop at city or country borders – it is an international project that we are specifically promoting with our activities.”
As part of the visit, the Gas and Heat Institute (GWI) presented its hybrid solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power project, the first such project outside Japan.
It is aimed at researching the potential of hydrogen in power generation, with city authorities noting that Mitsubishi Power Europe has supplied the technology.
