Essen offers citizens cash rewards for healthy urban transport ideas
Essen invited citizens, groups and initiatives to submit ideas for improving transport and quality of life in the city centre and Holsterhausen district, offering cash rewards for good ideas.
Under Lord Mayor of Essen Thomas Kufen, the city invited proposals under the Be-MoVe project and announced rewards of up to EUR 5,000, stressing that citizens should be involved in efforts to improve mobility in Essen.
Proposed projects must be located in the city centre or Holsterhausen district, be focused on mobility and transport, and applicants may not derive any economic benefit from their proposals.
Applicants whose ideas are adopted will receive between EUR 1,000 and 5,000 for each good project, depending on its size. A team of five Be-MoVe jury members will pick the best proposals from a technical point of view.
The city invites citizens and groups to send their proposals from 15 October to 15 December, noting that ideas can be submitted online.
Essen authorities pointed out that the Be-MoVe project is aimed at examining possibilities for improving mobility in the city and bringing about changes in behaviour, with a special focus on cyclists and pedestrians.
They noted that potential for change is significant, with proposals ranging from street space reallocation to revamped pedestrian and cycling paths and urban gardening. The Be-MoVe project is funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research through its social-ecological research programme.
