Essen is among the top ten business locations in Germany according to a study conducted by Die Deutsche Wirtschaft (DDW), which analyzed 3,802 places in total.

Mayor of Essen Thomas Kuffen stated on social media: ‘’Deutsche Wirtschaft (DDW) is the information network of German business and since 2017 has been investigating which German cities have the most top SMEs, top family businesses or global market leaders?’’

‘’Where have the most trendy companies settled, and where the most investors? How do entrepreneurs, managers and employees rate their city?’’ Mayor Kuffen continued.

The results show that Essen, like the year before, placed eighth overall, falling behind Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Stuttgart.

‘’The growing start-up scene also leads to the good ranking. The dynamic economic development, the good infrastructure and the central location are also rated particularly well by the companies so that Essen is high up in the Germany-wide ranking,’’ Mayor Kuffen explained.

With a population of about 583,000, Essen is the tenth-largest city in Germany and a part of the Metropole Ruhr, the third-largest conurbation in Europe after London and Paris. In addition to being the location of a renowned university, Essen serves as a rail hub, a retail trade hub, and a business service hub.

The city is today also regarded as one of Germany’s greenest cities. Essen received the designation of “European Green Capital” in 2017, recognizing the city’s dedication to the environment, notably in the fields of climate and resource protection. (photo credit: Fabian Schneidereit/Unsplash)
