Essen has presented its 2022 environmental prizes in November to projects focused on promoting sustainability and environmental protection.

Mayor of Essen Thomas Kufen presented the awards and stressed the importance of drawing attention to environmental issues.

“There were various evaluation criteria for the Essen Environmental Award 2022, such as measures for trees, for example in the context of climate adaptation, projects for a sustainable city to create an environment worth living in for future generations” and more, Kufen noted.

He pointed out that submissions were diverse and impressive this year, with several day-care centres and schools showing that a lot can be achieved with measures that are relatively easy to implement.

This was the 15th year that Essen presented the awards, with city authorities noting that this year’s focus was on protection of trees.

The jury that rated this year’s projects was comprised of representatives of the city administration, volunteers, media and sponsors.

Besides giving awards in the children/youth and adults/institutions categories, Essen presented a “fair trade” award for the first time this year.

The Bank im Bistum Essen won EUR 10,000 for its commitment to environmental protection in recent years, while the Mariengymnasium Essen-Werden won 2,000 for its project Fairtrade School.

Other projects that won prizes include the Roof and Orchards, and the Orchards with Sheep projects in the adult/institution category.
