Bratislava invites children to propose ways to improve the city
Bratislava has launched an online platform for children to propose ways to improve the city.
Mayor of Bratislava Matúš Vallo pointed out that he is honestly curious to see what children will propose, noting that adults should hear what children have to say.
He reminded that the project will give children the opportunity to say what bothers them in Bratislava, what they like and what they miss, stressing the importance of meeting the needs of children.
City authorities launched the project in cooperation with UNICEF, noting that children can send their suggestions in the form of letters, drawings or videos.
Bratislava pointed out that more than 30,000 children live in the city and called on them to send creative ideas to the Mayor.
After evaluation in January next year, children who suggested the best ideas will have an opportunity to discuss them with Vallo. City authorities pointed out that all suggestions to change public spaces are welcome, including the operation of city organisations such as museums, public transport and more.
UNICEF coordinator in Slovakia Michaela Bauer noted that “children’s participation is one of the most important dimensions of children’s rights and UNICEF advocates for it in all countries and territories where it operates.”
She concluded that children have “very strong and valuable opinions about their surroundings” because “children live in cities just like us.”
