Messina is promoting its inclusivity project for autistic kids, pointing out that more than 100 families were involved in the last year.

Presenting results of the project, Mayor of Messina Federico Basile noted that it helps to spread the culture of social inclusion and provides support to families, stressing that the coronavirus crisis period was especially difficult.

Councillor for social policy Alessandra Calafiore pointed out that the local community called for the project that was implemented by accredited research institutions.

She noted that, as part of the three-year project, the city adopted a new social, training and work strategy for young autistic people.

Calafiore concluded that one of the main purposes of the project is to strengthen the culture of integration and provide work experience to young autistic people.

Councillor for relations with EU institutions Carlotta Previti pointed out that Messina is financing the project with EUR 1.5 million and is implementing innovative research methodologies and techniques.

Institute for Biomedical Research and Innovation researcher Giovanni Pioggia noted that he is happy with the results thus far, pointing out that 111 families took part in the project.

“The use of important technologies and the use of various experimental protocols” make the project “one of the most advanced in Italy,” according to Pioggia, who stressed that children can take part from the earliest stages of life.
