Messina’s event helps combat eating disorders by informing and sensitizing
Messina organised an event to raise awareness about eating disorders among high school students.
Mayor of Messina Federico Basile and city officials attended the event at the Palacultura Antonello Auditorium, where attendants discussed eating disorders and connected topics.
In his introductory speech, Basile invited “young people to take advantage of these opportunities to learn about and deepen the important and serious problem of food-related diseases.”
He noted that the city administration organised the event in cooperation with education and health authorities.
City authorities pointed out that eating disorders are serious pathologies characterised by dysfunctional eating behaviour and an altered perception of the body image.
As part of the event, attendants had an opportunity to hear experts and testimonials, which helped students to understand eating disorders better.
Councillor Alessandra Calafiore expressed belief that “only by informing and sensitizing the new generations can such particular and widespread pathologies be combated,” adding that Messina is determined to do whatever it can to help.
Sufferers of eating disorders talked about their experiences and the roles that experts and family members played in their fight against pathologies.
Local athletes stressed the importance of healthy diets and lifestyles, and their effects on quality of life, among other.
