Murcia launches mobility project aiming to curb both noise and pollution
Murcia has launched a mobility project to reduce pollution and noise.
Headed by Mayor of Murcia José Antonio Serrano MartÃnez, city authorities stressed that the project will also improve public transport and traffic.
As part of the project, Murcia will remodel two streets that will have two separate lanes – for bicycles and scooters, and other vehicles. The new bicycle lanes will be connected to the existing network of bike lanes, with city authorities pointing out that the move will improve mobility and safety.
The project also includes construction of a node where residents will be able to park their bicycles or scooters, recharge them and change modes of transport as the node will be on the city’s bus and tram networks.
In addition, the city is planning to buy a new fleet of buses, stressing that they will pollute less than the current fleet as well as create less noise.
Carmen Fructuoso, city councillor for sustainable mobility, noted that the project will not reduce the number of trees in Murcia, stressing that some trees will be moved to nearby areas and authorities will plant additional 86 trees.
Murcia concluded that the project will help to lower the number of motor vehicles in the city centre by expanding parking lots at the periphery and connecting them with public transport, which will allow visitors to leave their vehicles far from the centre without sacrificing mobility.
