Essen approves sustainable energy and climate plan aiming for carbon neutrality
Essen has approved its Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan at the end of October.
Under Lord Mayor of Essen Thomas Kufen, the city adopted the document that will serve as a climate concept. The plan describes the strategic approach to climate protection and ways Essen will adapt to climate change.
The city pointed out that the plan will help it to achieve carbon neutrality, stressing that many measures need to be implemented in order to achieve environmental goals.
Essen drew up detailed plans for implementation of each measure, including costs and expected environmental effects. The City Council is to prioritise the measures and present them successively for resolution.
As part of the plan, Essen will promote and support measures and projects launched by citizens, companies and associations.
In the coming years, the city is planning to launch a digital climate portal to present relevant information on greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, among other.
City authorities pointed out that the action plan is a living document that will be continuously adapted, adding that the plan is worth more than EUR 180 million and stressing that the city will allocate resources for implementation in its budget.
Essen noted that implementation and development of the plan will require new employment, estimating that approximately 34 full-time equivalents will join the team next year, with the figure to reach about 53 in 2024.
