Warsaw has implemented a project aimed at limiting food waste, with 76 schools joining the School Does Not Waste project.

Headed by Mayor of Warsaw RafaƂ Trzaskowski, city authorities pointed out that the project focuses on collecting unsold food from stores, with merchants donating nearly 30 tonnes of food this year.

Warsaw pointed out that the number of stores participating in the project has increased since the launch of the project three years ago, stressing that more than 90 stores donated unsold food to volunteers this year.

Karolina Zdrodowska, Deputy Mayor of Warsaw, thanked the merchants for taking part in the project. “We want to show how much food can be saved,” she noted and expressed hope that the project will encourage more people to join the initiative.

City authorities called on all residents to reduce food waste by donating at 43 collection points in the capital, stressing that small gestures can help people in need.

As part of the project, Warsaw has been organising workshops on food waste reduction and cooking in 76 schools. Workshops are open to students and parents, who learn to prepare dishes from the most frequently wasted items.

Warsaw authorities pointed out that more than 9,000 children attended workshops this year and expressed hope that more schools and kindergartens will join next year.

Project effectiveness is summarised in reports that include good practices from all schools, which helps to strengthen the initiative.
