Uppsala’s new recycling service promotes circular economy

News

Uppsala has launched a construction material recycling service in Rosendal neighbourhood in cooperation with Wiklunds logistics and waste management company.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Uppsala Erik Pelling pointed out that the service is more of a second-hand shop for construction materials.

The project is aimed at reducing environmental impact of construction and promoting circular economy, and adds to environmental efforts from 2018 aimed at optimising construction logistics.

The service will collect leftover building materials from construction sites, store them and make them available for use in other projects.

Uppsala reaffirmed its commitment to the green push and pointed out that lowering environmental impact of construction will help the city to achieve climate targets.

The move will prevent waste and make full use of products that have already been made, reducing consumption of raw materials and adding to positive environmental effects.

City authorities pointed out that construction companies can deliver unused materials or order a pick-up, stressing that several construction sites in an area will be able to use the service, which will minimise the number of trips needed to move and store the materials.

The service will be available to companies and private individuals, with the new store to be inaugurated on 24 March.
