Uppsala marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, noting that the UN is raising awareness and calling for an end to violence.

Mayor of Uppsala Erik Pelling pointed out that violence in intimate relationships “is a poison in our society” and stressed the importance of doing more to prevent it.

He added that home is the most dangerous place for women today and called for zero tolerance towards domestic violence. “Nobody should be afraid in their own home,” he concluded.

Uppsala authorities reminded that the UN launched the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in 1999 and marks it on 25 November.

In 2008, then Secretary General of the UN Ban Ki-moon launched the “Orange Day” campaign to mark the day by lighting famous buildings in orange and wearing orange clothes.

Uppsala announced plans to illuminate a number of landmarks and famous buildings in orange on 25 November, stressing that violence is a serious violation of human rights.

According to Uppsala authorities, approximately one third of women face violence during their lifetimes, usually in their homes and from their partners or relatives.

City authorities called on female victims of violence to seek help from social services and added that perpetrators of violence can seek help to stop, stressing that support and help are available.
