Toulouse introduces new energy-saving measures for upcoming winter
Toulouse introduced energy measures aimed at cutting consumption and supporting the transition towards renewable sources.
Under Mayor of Toulouse Jean-Luc Moudenc, the city announced energy-saving measures for the winter, which include lowering air temperature in public buildings, switching off public lighting earlier and more.
Christmas decorations will be put up one week later and taken down one week earlier, which will save roughly 20 MWh according to estimates. In addition, Christmas decorations and lighting of monuments will be switched off at 10 p.m. to cut consumption further.
City authorities pointed out that heating in schools and other public buildings with the exception of nursing homes and nurseries will be set to 19° Celsius, adding that heating will be turned on later in the morning and turned off earlier in the evening.
The package of measures will help to conserve energy, Toulouse authorities noted, as well as move the city towards renewable sources.
The city noted that it will double investments in renovation of public buildings, stressing the importance of improving energy efficiency and quality of life. It will invest EUR 2 million annually in this effort with a focus on schools and construct 19 buildings by 2026 whose renewable energy output will exceed their needs.
Toulouse pointed out that it continues to expand its car fleet with electric vehicles as part of the transition away from fossil fuels and towards more sustainable sources of energy.
