Strasbourg safe for cyclists

Cycling has exploded after lockdown, especially in large cities. In Strasbourg, the number of cyclists has increased by 22% over one year but there are no more accidents according to the CADR67, an association for the promotion of cycling in the department of Bas-Rhin.

The number of cyclists has increased clearly since the lockdown. In Strasbourg, the CADR67 association notes an increase of 22% over the last 12 months. But compared to other large French cities, there are no more accidents while Road Safety is launching a first major awareness campaign this Friday for motorists and cyclists.

„The increase in the number of accidents may be true in cities where there were very few bicycles before, but in the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg, this is not the case“ explains Fabien Masson, director of CADR67. “The cyclist is the most vulnerable participants in the traffic, after the pedestrian. And if applied to the number of accidents over the last six years in Strasbourg, it is obvious that all fatal accidents involving cyclists are due to trucks, vans, or buses”.

12% of trips are made by bicycle in the Eurometropolis, 23% in the downtown of Strasbourg.
