Smart water management project kicks off in Paphos
The largest smart city project in Cyprus concerning smart water management and water metering has recently been signed by the municipality of Paphos. The project’s major goal is to promote sustainable water resource management by ensuring the long-term protection of available resources and the environment.
Mayor of Paphos Phedon Phedonos stated on social media: ‘’The Municipality of Paphos is even closer to the implementation of the strategic goal of transforming the city into a Smart and Digital city. With the signing of the contract, the major project for the supply, installation, operation and maintenance of an integrated system for smart water management and water metering begins.’’
According to the mayor of the Cypriot city, this is the largest smart city project in Cyprus to date. The new system will help reduce water loss, improve water quality, and ensure that everyone has access to water.
It will include, among other things, the installation of a leak detection and prevention system, the installation of 27,000 smart water meters with high accuracy and automatic meter reading, the installation of a water supply network monitoring, control, and full automation system, and the installation of an automatic chlorination system.
The city located in the southwestern part of Cyprus has faced major issues in real-time monitoring and management of its water resources, particularly water quantity and quality, for a long time.
‘’Optimal management and active leakage control will drastically reduce water losses. In addition, improving the quality of the water supplied to citizens is of major importance, as it is inextricably linked to their health,’’ mayor of Paphos Phedon Phedonos also stated.
The Cypriot city, which attracts a large number of international tourists each year, also places a great emphasis on sustainable development. Most recently, Paphos has been selected among the 100 most sustainable tourist destinations in the world. (photo credit: knews.kathimerini.com.cy)
