Rome wants to play a part in rebuilding Ukraine
Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri has participated in the 149th plenary session of the European Committee of Regions in Brussels which was dedicated to Ukraine and the refugee situation in this country.
Mayor Gualtieri stated on social media: ‘’It was an opportunity to recall the extraordinary generosity shown by Roma women and men: hundreds of families have registered to offer hospitality to Ukrainian refugees, and thousands of people, women, and children, have been welcomed into our city’s hotels.’’
‘’But our goal is also to mobilize resources to integrate refugees, and today in Rome many are attending language courses, children are going to school and the most fragile are being taken care of,’’ mayor of Rome continued.
However, mayor of Rome said cities must also continue to support Ukraine in the future and do even more to help the Ukrainian people. To do that, mayor Gualtieri offered Rome’s full support for the mayor of Kyiv’s idea for summer camps for Ukrainian children.
Moreover, he also addressed future plans for rebuilding Ukraine, which has been the target of Russian aggression since February 24th of this year. He suggested for each European city to take part in rebuilding a Ukrainian school which has been destroyed during the war, together with local authorities.
Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri also thanked the President of the Committee of the Regions Apostolos Tzitzikostas for organizing this important event amid the largest humanitarian crisis we have witnessed in recent history.
‘’It is a concrete example of the great contribution that local authorities, European cities, and regions can give on such important issues for the whole world. Rome is there, and will never fail to make its contribution, for solidarity, for peace,’’ he stated. (photo credit: Flickr)
