Prague turns radiant during the energy-efficient Signal Lights Festival
Mayor of Prague Zdeněk Hřib hosted the Signal Light Festival from 13 to 16 October focused on light art and new technologies. The annual event is traditionally held in October in Prague, with local and foreign lighting designers creating installations in public spaces and streets of the city.
Thanks to the appeal of the concept to both the general public and professionals, it has become one of the largest cultural events in the Czech Republic. As part of the festival, more than 20 artistic light exhibitions were displayed across the city utilising both natural and man-made features.
Artists used many historic buildings to display their projects, some of which were interactive. Organisers released an app and made physical maps available to help attendants find their way around the festival. The festival was launched in 2010, on the 600th anniversary of the Prague Astronomical Clock, with a light show on the clock tower at the Old Town Hall. This year the festival marked its 10th anniversary.
Organisers pointed out that the festival is energy-efficient, with electricity consumption of roughly 10,000 kWh, and added that they eliminated single-use plastics as well as promotional items from unsustainable materials in an effort to be more environmentally friendly and sustainable. They suggest enjoying the festival on foot or bicycle, noting that the festival partnered up with Rekola bicycle sharing system for this purpose. New and existing users can get two free rides during the festival with the use of a special code.
