Prague announced their 10th “Dry February” campaign
The city of Prague, led by mayor Zdeněk Hřib, supports and encourages the citizens to abstain from drinking alcohol for the entire month.
This is the tenth annual “Dry February” campaign which was established with the goal of lowering the consumption of alcohol in the city. The idea is to create large impact on people’s health, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the World Health Organization, Czechs are among the world’s biggest alcohol consumers. About 15% of the population consumes it regularly, meaning that Czechia is one of the top five countries in terms of alcohol consumption per capita for years now.
This is one of the biggest reasons why this campaign is so important. Abstaining from alcohol for a full month can lead to better self-awareness and higher energy levels. By experiencing these benefits some people would probably stop drinking for good, or start drinking less.
Every year, more and more people participate in this project, and the results after the campaign are truly incredible.
In 2021, more than 700,000 people from all over the country participated in the campaign. The survey of 706 participants was done the same year, which revealed that 53% of them reduced their consumption of alcohol for 4 months after the campaign, which has shown that the campaign has real long-term benefits.
This campaign is launched by the mayor of Prague Zdeněk Hřib, who realizes the importance of this project which is also largely supported by other companies, regions, and also by the Czech Police.
“I am happy to support the Dry February awareness campaign this year. Alcohol consumption in the Czech Republic is not something we should be proud of. Dry February is, therefore, a great opportunity to test how much control we have over our alcohol consumption. Sometimes we forget that alcohol is also an addictive substance that can have very negative effects on the health and lives of others”, said mayor of Prague Zdeněk Hřib.
