Nantes kickstarts public consultation for pedestrian zone expansion
Nantes is planning an expansion of pedestrian and limited traffic zones that should be completed by 2025.
City authorities headed by Mayor of Nantes Johanna Rolland noted that public consultation is underway and invited residents to take part in discussions from mid-June to 21 July.
Deputy Mayor Simon Citeau reminded that Nantes is committed to expansion of pedestrian and limited traffic zones as part of broader environmental efforts.
He added that city authorities are promoting walking in Nantes through various projects, new infrastructure, measures, initiatives and more.
Pedestrian areas in the city centre are to be expanded, which is aimed at improving safety and mobility as well as making Nantes greener.
New trees and other greenery will be planted as part of pedestrianisation projects to improve air quality, reduce noise and fight against the heat island effect, among other.
Citeau pointed out that the city allocated EUR 2 million for the projects which will be implemented gradually, adding that 20 streets will be entirely or partially pedestrianised.
City authorities announced that the Saint-Mihiel will be returned to pedestrians and cyclists by the end of June and noted that public transport will be expanded under the new traffic model.
Nantes invited residents to take part in the consultation process, which is necessary to develop the city in line with their wishes.
