The European Commission has revealed the 100 EU cities that will take part in the EU Cities Mission, which aims to create 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. The Hungarian cities of Budapest, Miskolc, and Pécs have been selected in the competition of 377 cities that applied.

Mayor of Pécs Attila Péterffy stated on social media: ‘’The fruits of our hard work are in! The European Commission has positively assessed our application to make Pécs a climate-neutral and smart city, which is also a center of innovation.’

Pécs will be one of the 100 participating cities in the project until 2030, and a total of €360 million in direct EU funding will be disbursed among the selected cities between 2021 and 2023, implying that Pécs would receive significant development funds in the years to come.

‘’This is another big step towards making our home a healthy, innovative, green, and smart city. A place where it is good to live and where young people can start their lives,’’ mayor Péterffy continued.

Hungary’s largest and capital city Budapest has also been selected to take part in the Cities Mission. Budapest is considered one of Hungary’s greenest cities, with a strong focus on sustainability and climate action.

Mayor of Budapest Gergely Karácsony stated on social media: ‘’It is a huge success and an opportunity: the European Commission will give priority to supporting Budapest in achieving the 2030 climate target.’’

According to the European Commission, urban regions consume more than 65 percent of global energy and produce more than 70 percent of CO2 emissions. That is why the selected 100 cities are set to take on innovative climate and sustainability projects in the upcoming period, and eventually, help all the other EU cities to become climate-neutral by 2050.

Mayor of Miskolc Pál Veres stated on social media: ‘’In our Greater Miskolc programme, environmental and climate protection was a key promise. We have started on this path and now Miskolc has received help to achieve one of our most important objectives.’’ (photo credit: Gerd Altmann/Pixabay)
