Budapest to create its first green and energy-positive neighbourhood
Budapest is building a neighbourhood with a positive energy balance in Újpest district as part of a recently launched EU project.
City authorities headed by Mayor of Budapest Gergely Karácsony reminded that the plan was presented at the project launch conference in Lyon in February.
Budapest pointed out that it is basing the project on the experiences of Lyon and Munich, and cooperating with Alba Iulia, Charleroi, Porto, Prague and Stockholm to make the neighbourhood as sustainable and resource-efficient as possible.
As part of the project, Budapest will build social rental apartments in the place of a derelict building, noting that the nearby wastewater treatment plant, cemetery and nursing home will be included in climate-friendly development.
City authorities reiterated that amount of energy produced in the neighbourhood will exceed consumption thanks to environmentally friendly and sustainable energy systems that will be installed.
The project has an environmental and a social focus, and includes plans to expand sustainable transport in the neighbourhood.
BKK public transport company noted that it was cooperating with city authorities and investigating the possibilities for development of sustainable public transport and electromobility.
Budapest expressed hope that local school and church will join the project, stressing that this would create more opportunities to make the neighbourhood greener.
