The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group announced at the World Mayors Summit in Buenos Aires that they plan to create 50 million green jobs by 2030.

Group leader, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, expressed belief that “investing in the jobs and skills of the future will help us to tackle inequality as we tackle the climate crisis.” He added that London plans to lead by example, by making “green jobs accessible within communities that need them most.”

Khan stressed that London plans to double its green economy by the end of the decade and concluded that it is high time for cities to join the push for the creation of green jobs.

Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala added that “the Green and Just Recovery that global cities are striving for needs green, good jobs that will support citizens facing the energy crisis, the climate emergency and the social and economic impact of the pandemic.”

Sala reminded that the C40 group is committed to the creation of jobs “through inclusive climate action” and concluded that the push will engage youth, the civil society, businesses and governments.

Mayor of Barcelona Ada Colau expressed belief that solutions to current crises “will not be a fair one if it is not green, nor will it be green if it is not fair.” She pointed out that Barcelona is generating more than 40,000 green jobs, but stressed that this is not enough.

Colau concluded that cities must make sure “that everyone can pay for their housing, fill the fridge and turn on the heating… ensuring a fair winter must be the top priority.”
