The Greek city of Patras is currently led by mayor Kostas Peletidis who was re-elected as mayor in the second round of the local elections that took place in June 2019. Peletidis was born in the town of Ryakio, Kozani, in 1953. He majored in medicine with a specialization in cardiology.

Mayor Peletidis chose Patras, a bustling student city with a world-famous carnival, as a city where he wanted to live, work and actively participate in shaping the future. Peletidis was elected mayor of Patras for the first time in 2014. He has been involved in trade union, social, and political campaigns for a long time and continues to do so.

A doctor by profession, Peletidis held several important positions in the medical sphere. He was a member of the Board of the Federation of Doctors of IKA and a representative of the Medical Association of Patras in the Panhellenic Medical Association. He has been a member of the Patras Municipal Council since 1999 when he was first elected as a municipal councilor. As mayor of Patras, Peletidis is focused on developing modern and safe infrastructure in this Greek city.

Mayor Peletidis has launched and supported a number of initiatives to restore and modernize the city’s infrastructure in order to improve the quality of life in Patras. In March this year, Peletidis signed a contract for the project “Reconstruction of roads and small technical projects, in Local Communities of Pititsa, Selli, Argyron, Ano Kastritsi and other beneficiaries of the Municipality of Patras’’. Road paving, construction of retaining walls and sewerage pipes, as well as sidewalk paving will all be carried out as part of this reconstruction project.

At the same time, mayor Peletidis focuses on boosting the city’s tourist offer by revitalizing cultural facilities in Patras. A major art venue “Thanos Mikroutsikos” had an important place in the cultural life of the city back in 2006, when Patras carried the title of the European Capital of Culture but has since then been abandoned. Mayor Peletidis recently announced that the building will be renovated and will soon again become a central venue for various types of events in Patras.

Patras also has strong smart city aspirations. The Municipality of Patras presented a Strategic Plan for a Smart City to the Ministry of Digital Governance in February 2021. The plan incorporates different ground-breaking efforts that could benefit all people of Patras in the future. These include, among other things, utilization of new technologies for the rational use of drinking water, implementation of intelligent waste collection systems, digital autonomous systems for the measurement, control, and management, and saving of energy.
