Mayor Jaroslav Polaček is behind Košice’s remarkable transformation

Jaroslav Polaček is a Slovak regional politician and the current mayor of Košice. In the municipal elections on November 11, 2018, he was elected mayor. Polaček is a Košice native with a strong sense of justice. He believes that only hard work for society will yield results for individuals, that public finances are a tool for improving community life and that political function is a service. 

When the people of Košice elected him as mayor in 2018, he became the city’s first mayor with no political affiliation, and started to fight for ‘’law and justice,’’ he states on his official webpage. Fighting corruption, numerous infrastructure projects, ensuring safety and promoting sustainable mobility are some of the highlights of mayor Polaček’s mayoral term.

Even during his campaign, mayor of Košice set the renewal of urban road management as one of his top priorities. Mayor Polaček also dealt with building smart pedestrian crossings and introducing a new public lighting maintenance system. He repaired nearly 100 sidewalks, including those on Runská and Sloboda, Továrenská, Ján Pavel II, Potoná or Urbánková, Americká tda, Táborská, Juná tda, Irkutská, and Kharkovská streets. 

Mayor Polaček also deserves recognition for leading his city in a way that has been described as extremely transparent. He regularly invites and encourages the city’s residents to take an active role in shaping the city and get involved with some of the most important projects which are being carried out in Košice. To make sure the city belongs to each and every Košice resident, mayor Polaček also promotes dialogue about public spaces in this Slovak city.

To help even more foreigners feel at home in Košice, the city has created a page within the INTEGRA program where they can find answers to their questions, as well as useful advice and information on their rights. This helps Košice establish itself as an attractive destination where people from around the world can come to live and work.

Furthermore, mayor of Košice wishes for the city’s future to be green. That is why he is doing everything to promote green policies and bring green solutions to the city.
