US hydrogen fuel cell company Plug Power is planning to build a facility in Leganés as part of its efforts aimed at increasing the use of fuel cells in logistics.

Headed by Mayor of Leganés Santiago Llorente, the city will host the logistics project that Plug Power will implement in cooperation with French FM Logistics.

Plug Power general manager of applications José Luis Crespo noted “we are currently in advanced conversations with companies that operate large centres in Spain and, in addition, we are speaking with some of the car manufacturers in the country.”

The project in Leganés is part of the company’s broader efforts aimed at promoting and increasing the use of hydrogen in logistics across Europe.

Plug Power signed a deal with Lidl retailer on use of renewable hydrogen in logistics and launched a facility north of Nantes that will allow the retailer to switch to hydrogen in several parts of Europe.

The company pointed out that fuel cells can be replaced faster than batteries can be charged, adding that the switch to fuel cells improves efficiency and lowers greenhouse gas emissions.

Plug Power announced plans to build two hydrogen plants in Spain in 2023, stressing that one is to start production in 2024 or 2025. The planned plants are worth approximately EUR 200 million, with the company pointing out that it continues to analyse demand for hydrogen in Spain.
