Led by mayor Arsenovič, Maribor targets climate neutrality
Slovenia’s second-largest city Maribor has been led by mayor Saša Arsenovič since 2018. Arsenovič is a Slovenian entrepreneur, politician and lawyer who was born in 1966. His main goal has always been to make Maribor a better place not only for the city’s residents but also for those who may just be visiting or passing through the famous Slovenian mountain city with a renowned winemaking heritage.
Already in his election programme, mayor Arsenovič presented his plans for Maribor to be a city with a successful economy and excellent living conditions. As one of the ways to achieve this, he relied on establishing good relations with educational institutions and investing in science, knowledge, and youth. At the same time, the city of Maribor also came up with some of the most ambitious climate goals. By becoming more sustainable, Maribor hopes to make its own contribution to the fight against climate change.
Maribor was one of the six Slovenian cities that have responded to the European Commission’s call through which a list of the first 100 climate-neutral and smart cities will be compiled. Due to the strong emphasis that mayor Arsenovič puts on climate and sustainability, the city has a real shot at achieving its numerous goals. As some of his main values, mayor Arsenovič lists transparency, the culture of dialogue, considering differing opinions and perspectives, and networking to achieve common goals.
In his elections programme, he also stated that intergenerational coexistence, cooperation, and generational understanding were becoming modern-day priorities. As a result, when planning for the future, the municipality of Maribor is determined to ensure quality living conditions for all generations. Furthermore, mayor Arsenovič expressed a strong will to utilise Maribor’s favourable geographical position and establish the city as an important centre of knowledge and economic opportunities.
