Helsinki to revamp Suvilahti cultural centre for year-round events

Helsinki is preparing to develop the Suvilahti cultural centre to improve the event offer and develop tourism.

Headed by Mayor of Helsinki Juhana Vartiainen, city authorities noted that the area will be developed in the coming years, during which time it will not be possible to organise large events there.

Start of construction is planned for late summer this year and the project is to be completed by the summer of 2026 at the latest.

Helsinki stressed that the move is aimed at making Suvilahti one of the best places in Finland for indoor and outdoor events all year round, adding that this summer’s events Tuska and Flow will be held as planned.

Helsinki’s head of brands and events Sanna Forsström pointed out that the cultural centre will be able host a broad range of events throughout the year, which will help to make the city more vibrant and lively.

City authorities reminded that Helsinki’s strategy adopted in 2017 includes the development of Suvilahti into a permanent event area, noting that it is accessible by foot, bicycle and public transport.

Under the development strategy for the period up to 2025, the cultural centre is to be expanded and modernised.

While not in use, the outdoor event area will be available to the residents. City authorities noted that the temporary skate ramp in the area will be torn down and a new skate ramp will be built.
