Helsinki invests in energy efficiency of municipal buildings
Helsinki continues to invest in energy efficiency of municipal buildings as part of efforts to reach carbon neutrality by 2030.
Under Mayor of Helsinki Juhana Vartiainen, city authorities noted that the move will help to reduce energy consumption and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
As part of the project, city authorities will target three municipal buildings – Torpparinmäki and Puistopolku schools and Vaahteramäki kindergarten.
City authorities pointed out that municipal buildings are large consumers of energy and noted that the project will cut energy consumption in the three buildings in question nearly 50%.
Improving energy efficiency will make it easier to control indoor conditions and lower maintenance costs while increasing market value of the properties in question.
According to estimates, the three coming projects will lower annual energy consumption by roughly 1,700 MWh, which corresponds to approximately 247 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
As part of the project, municipal buildings will switch to geothermal heating and more efficient lighting as well as boast other modern solutions aimed at improving energy performance.
City authorities reminded that projects implemented last year exceeded their targets with regard to energy savings and noted that Helsinki will continue to implement green projects to reach its environmental targets.
More than half of Helsinki’s CO2 emissions currently come from heating.
