Helsinki is preparing mobility reforms for electric scooters in the city centre to improve traffic safety.

Headed by Mayor of Helsinki Juhana Vartiainen, city authorities are planning to designate parking areas for electric scooters and bicycles and prohibit parking in other places.

As part of the process, city authorities launched a survey on planned parking area, inviting residents to take part and help the city draw up a plan that will meet their needs and expectations.

Helsinki noted that the growing number of electric scooters has created problems in the city centre, pointing out that the planned project should alleviate them.

As part of planned reforms, Helsinki is to enter into agreements with micromobility operators to regulate the use of planned parking spaces.

City authorities stressed that parking would be allowed only in marked spaces and added that street signs and operators’ apps would guide users to such parking spaces.

Helsinki noted that new restrictions would apply only to rental electric scooters and bicycles, adding that residents will still be able to use and park their scooters and bicycles as before.

According to plans, 132 existing car parking spaces will be repurposed as part of the project and a total of 249 spaces will be reserved for rental micromobility vehicles.

City authorities pointed out that these parking spaces may be used for different purposes in the winter if necessary, including snow removal.
