Helsinki is supporting the New Materials, New Designs ecological materials design project to create innovative products.

Under Mayor of Helsinki Juhana Vartiainen, the city is supporting the project through the Helsinki Cluster Programme for Circular Economy, noting that it will help to bring together ecological materials and young designers from all parts of Finland.

The design competition will close at the end of February next year, with best submissions to win a total of EUR 10,000.

Helsinki authorities pointed out that the project is in line with the city’s environmental strategy and stressed the importance of attracting individuals and companies “who work for the best interests of the entire world.”

The city will implement measures aimed at creating opportunities for companies to grow and facilitate innovation, announced Cluster Programme head Mira Jarkko.

Heidi Maria Huovinen, creative director at Young Finnish Design, the organiser of the competition, pointed out that the project will offer an opportunity to young designers and promote design of products with environmentally friendly materials.

“The aim is to inspire as many emerging designers as possible to take advantage of the most up-to-date competence offered by top Finnish education,” she noted and added “we want to create cooperation between young designers and the forward-thinking companies involved in the competition.”

More than 100 ideas were submitted at last year’s competition, with winning designs currently in the product development phase.
