Green transformation for Bremen logistics with the new CityCube centre

News

Mayor of Bremen Andreas Bovenschulte has opened the CityCube logistics centre, a central component of Bremen’s inner city logistics concept.

The centre hosts a fleet of electric cargo bikes that will supply local shops from the central micro-hub, with city authorities pointing out that ten stores are participating.

Bremen company Rytle devised the concept and provided cargo bikes and software for the project.

Bovenschulte stressed that the project will “fundamentally change inner-city delivery traffic” and added that the innovative concept will make Bremen more attractive.

He pointed out that the move will lower the number of cars, vans and trucks used in logistics, which will make the city centre less polluted and noisy.

Bovenschulte added that the project will have positive economic effects as it will strengthen online competition and introduce new delivery options.

City authorities noted that the project will help local stores with “last kilometre” delivery and stressed that use of electric cargo bikes will lower greenhouse gas emissions.

The move will make it easier for residents to go shopping without a car as they will have more delivery options available.

Bovenschulte concluded that the project will improve quality of life in Bremen as more products will be delivered using electric or muscle power rather than diesel.
