Green light for Germany’s first climate neutral event venue in Munich
The German city of Munich, led by mayor Dieter Reiter, is to get a new multi-use, climate-neutral, 20,000 capacity event arena which could grow to be the Bavarian city’s newest landmark. The project has recently been approved by the city council.
Populous, a global architectural design firm specialising in creating environments and venues, announced in a press release that they have been chosen as the architect for the project. Professor Markus Allmann convened the jury that chose Populous’ winning design after a multi-stage architecture competition.
The new event arena will be Germany’s first climate-neutral one thanks to lifecycle-based planning to cut carbon emissions. Thousands of solar panels on the stadium’s roof and throughout the site, as well as the possibility of geothermal energy and district heating, will ensure that the energy needed to run the arena is generated and supplied on site, the company stated.
Declan Sharkey, Lead Architect for the project and Senior Principal at Populous, said: “The design for MUCcc Arena places people at its heart, delivering a unique and immersive visitor experience, as well as showcasing the very latest in sustainable design methods. The project will create a new cultural centre for Munich and the wider Bavarian region to rival the best live entertainment venues in the world.”
The arena will be built next to LabCampus, Munich Airport’s technology and innovation centre, in a completely new green space. Because no comparable venue exists in the Munich metropolitan area, the new event centre is expected to significantly enhance the region’s cultural offerings while also boosting tourism and the local economy.
The arena’s sustainability and climate strategy will be shaped by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and it will be certified according to an internationally recognized sustainability standard. (photo credit: Populous official website)
