Citizens of Nantes to participate in “New Horizons of the Tramway” project

Since the creation of the first line in 1985, the tram has always been on the rise in the Nantes metropolis.

In five years, the number of users has increased by 12% with no less than 320,000 trips per day. In June 2019, Mayor of Nantes, Johanna Rolland, announced the commissioning of three new tram lines by 2026, in support of urban projects and to improve the network. The same month, the metropolitan council approved the launch of the studies.

The citizens will be able to contribute to this new project

Until December 18, 2020, Nantes Métropole invites you to participate in the consultation on the creation of three new tram lines in 2026, as well as on the transformation of the Anne-de-Bretagne bridge, necessary to accommodate them. The extensions of these lines in 2030-2035 will also be considered.

The consultation is a regulatory process that aims to involve the public in the decision-making of projects. Conductor of the “New horizons for the tramway” project, Nantes Métropole therefore called on the National Commission for Public Debate (CNDP) to identify the best way to keep the citizens informed and to participate in the decisions of the project.

From a certain degree of importance, organizing consultation with the general public is mandatory to involve them in the final decision. Beyond this legal obligation, Nantes Métropole is particularly attached to citizen dialogue, which aims to inform the decisions of elected officials.

The stake of the dialogue is to enrich, to adapt and to transform the public action with the point of view of the citizens.

For the community, it is therefore a posture of openness, which goes beyond a simple form of consultation in which the public is encouraged to express themselves mainly in the form of reactions.

The participation mechanism offers several formats for meetings and speaking out, allowing you to be well informed in order to contribute effectively. Contributions can be individual, but also collective. Contributions can be a reaction, an opinion or a co-developed proposal. Every opinion counts! Indeed, everything that will be expressed, both orally and in writing, will be given to the guarantors appointed by the CNDP. After the “consultation report” is made, the elected officials will take note of it and will decide, during a metropolitan council in spring 2021, on the follow-up to be given. This will be the subject of a public communication.
