Children drive change in Malmö’s urban development with the My Place project
Malmö is promoting engagement of children and young people in urban development through the My Place project.
Headed by Mayor of Malmö Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, city authorities stressed that the project will help children and young people to explore and influence their local environment.
The project focuses on education and exercises in groups, offering young residents opportunities to explore their immediate environment, reflect on it and take an active role in urban development.
Children will be encouraged to think about important locations, how they travel between them, identify key issues and propose ideas and solutions.
City authorities pointed out that groups will be small (approximately 10 participants per group) and the programme can be adapted for younger and older target groups.
Besides helping attendants to learn about maps and geography, it will teach them about democracy and operation of local government units, including the ways they can influence the city’s decisions before they turn 18 and are allowed to vote.
City authorities reminded that the pilot project was launched last year in Klagshamn neighbourhood with positive results.
At children’s proposal, a new playground was built in the neighbourhood, cycling lanes were marked and separated from pedestrians, and traffic around the schools was rearranged to improve safety.
