Brussels: Schuman Square redevelopment starts soon

News, the administration for grants for the renovation, has granted the building permit for the complete Schuman square redevelopment to Brussels Mobility, meaning that the transformation work can finally take place after an intensive process of several years.

The whole idea started back in 2015. The company Brussels Mobility organized a tender for redesign of Schuman square, together with City Council of Brussels. More than 20 companies participated and one quarter of the participants were selected by City Council commission to submit their ideas for transformation of the square.

Danish architectural company COBE and then newly found BRUT office from Brussels got elected for this project.

Secretary of State of the Brussels-Capital Region Pascal Smet stated:” From my point of view, one of the most important places in Europe, with great potential, was completely neglected. It used to be a square to which you would turn your back to as quickly as possible and it will now become a place to stay. A place where Brussels’ citizens, European officials and visitors can connect with each other. It will also become the new gateway to the beautiful Cinquantenaire Park.”

Earlier in 2021,the groundwork for the project was laid and the construction started.

Mayor of Brussels Phillipe Close stated: “Together with my colleagues from the Region, we are very pleased that we will soon be able to start the redevelopment works of the Schuman square, thanks to the permit granted”.

Mayor Close continued: “The City of Brussels, capital of the European Union and home to 184 nationalities, can only welcome its consolidation as the heart of the European Quarter. This project is also about improving a district 10 minutes away from all the facilities for its residents, by creating a welcoming space for relaxation and socializing between the different neighborhoods and people”.

The general design of this square is based on modern architecture, which incorporates a lot of concentric circles. The central part of this square will be covered by round, metal canopy, with green roof, which will serve to help visitors enjoy in their break without fear from precipitation. Alongside the canopy, there will be a large pedestrian area surrounding the main installation. There will be numerous benches, bushes and nearly 100 trees will be planted in this surrounding area.

Besides Schuman square, the Petite rue de la Loi will also be transformed. The plan is to connect the Cinquantenaire Park with the new square and make a large pedestrian area. The Schuman square will be sort of an entrance to this park, which will make an interesting concept.

The idea is to make this square a new symbol of the city. Steel structure in the center of the square is meant to symbolize both the city and its residents. This will be a new attraction and an “eye-catcher” of the Brussels. The design is also adaptable, so various different manifestations will be held there.  (photo credit: COBE/Brut/Brussels Mobility)
