Bremen aims to become Germany’s hydrogen technology hub
Bremen hosted the Hydrogen Technology Expo Europe on 19 and 20 October, the largest trade fair dedicated only to hydrogen and fuel cell industries. Mayor of Bremen Andreas Bovenschulte hosted a meeting with organisers at the town hall, stressing that the city wants to become one of the leading hydrogen centres in Europe.
The fair and conference hosted more than 300 exhibitors and more than 150 speakers, including representatives of energy companies BP, Equinor, ThyssenKrupp, Aramco and E.ON, among other. Exhibitors showcased the latest technologies in the hydrogen supply chain aimed at commercialising hydrogen as an environmentally friendly source of energy.
The German government invested roughly EUR 30 million in Bremen to establish it as a hydrogen hub. German Minister of Education and Research Bettina Stark-Watzinger previously announced that she wants “to make Germany a hydrogen republic” and pointed out “we will have to supply our industry with energy in a climate-neutral and reliable manner in the future.”
She stressed that Germany has an opportunity to “make hydrogen technologies the next leading German export,” pointing out that Bremen can play an important role in the process.
As part of the green push in the EU, governments have announced ambitious hydrogen projects aimed at achieving the bloc’s emission goals and strengthening energy supply. Speaking in September, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed that hydrogen could be a “game-changer” for the EU.
