Alicante has approved a new public housing project worth approximately EUR 3.4 million and announced plans to put it out to public tender.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Alicante Luis Barcala noted that 32 new homes will be built in Ceuta Street and added that the project should be completed in roughly two years.

Councillor José Ramón González stressed the importance of expanding Alicante’s social housing programme and pointed out that the project will “guarantee access to housing for the people who need it most.”

The building will have an A energy rating and solar panels on the roof, which will make it more energy efficient and lower its carbon footprint.

It will boast an underground car park and storage rooms, with city authorities pointing out that an area on the ground floor will be reserved for parking bicycles. Six apartments will be wheelchair-accessible and a part of the roof will serve as an outdoor meeting area.

As part of the project, Alicante will develop outdoor community spaces in the area, including parks and gardens, which will improve quality of life in the neighbourhood.

González reminded that city authorities are focused on expansion of the housing stock and will continue to implement housing projects on municipal plots.

He added that Alicante continues to remove asbestos from the municipal housing stock, with roofs of three houses to be replaced in the coming months.
