Abandoned plots in Athens to be transformed into green areas

Athens has announced plans to build more than 17,000 square metres of new green areas in Sepolia and Rizoupoli neighbourhoods.

Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis pointed out that the project will make Athens greener and provide residents with more areas for recreation and leisure.

He thanked Buildings Infrastructures (KTYP) development company for free five-year concessions on the land in question, stressing that the areas will be developed and opened to the public.

The site in Sepolia was used by a distillery that closed in 1986, with city authorities reminding that industrial buildings were torn down recently. The area of nearly 13,500 square metres is to be transformed and put to use after more than four decades.

The site in Rizoupoli is adjacent to a school and a park, with city authorities pointing out that development of the abandoned area will improve quality of life in the neighbourhood.

KTYP reminded that residents of both neighbourhoods called for development of the two abandoned plots and added that the project will put the areas to good use.

City authorities noted that Athens will be responsible for maintenance of new green areas and added that concession contracts can be extended.

New green areas will have walking and cycling paths that will be connected to existing infrastructure, with Athens stressing that the project will improve mobility and air quality.
