Denmark is one of Europe’s most progressive and developed countries. Its charming capital Copenhagen is famous for innovations, sustainability and high-quality of life. In November 2021, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen took office as the new mayor of the Danish capital. Led by this ambitious politician, Copenhagen has already taken on many large projects. The city is successfully maintaining its reputation as one of the happiest and most livable cities, while at the same time becoming safer, greener and more sustainable. The new mayor Sophie Hæstorp Andersen was previously chair of the regional council for the capital region, as well as a member of Parliament and the Socialdemokratiet’s spokesperson for healthcare issues. After being elected new mayor, Hæstorp Andersen stated she was looking to strengthen the dialogue with the residents of the city and ‘’move’’ the city hall to different city’s districts. By visiting different parts of Copenhagen, she wants to develop a closer relationship with the people of Copenhagen and really get to know the challenges they are facing, in order to be able to address them better. This way, Hæstorp Andersen is working towards making the Danish capital a city of equality where everybody’s opinion is appreciated. Hæstorp Andersen was born in Gladsaxe and today resides in Copenhagen’s district of Vesterbro. After completing her education, she worked in the social administration. During this time, mayor of Copenhagen worked on improving the living conditions for people with mental health conditions, which according to Hæstorp Andersen’s official website, afforded her a glimpse into a very other world, one rife with stigma and a scarcity of opportunity. In the years to come, Hæstorp Andersen would also work in a range of other sectors. She was able to gain valuable experience in topics related to culture, immigration, healthcare and housing. Versatile politicians with a deep understanding of various sectors in industries make great leaders because they are able to deal with a series of complex contemporary issues modern cities face nowadays. Providing more affordable housing is one of the goals the mayor of Copenhagen is committed to. Plans include cheaper housing for students and socially vulnerable people, with a special emphasis on the sustainability aspect. Being a proud Copenhagen resident, Hæstorp Andersen’s main goal is to make the Danish capital an even greener and more equitable place.
