Palma City Council invests 59 million euros for maintenance of green areas and trees for the next four years

From January 2021 it will be possible to start planting 2,000 trees in the streest to replace specimens that could not be replaced during the years of extension.

The Councilor for Infrastructure and Accessibility, Angélica Pastor, and the General Coordinator of the Area, Luis Sureda, explained that this contract is very important for the city, as it will make progress in the Palma Verda 2030 Plan (Green Palma Plan) to adapt the City Council’s environmental policy to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “This contract will allow us to change the appearance of our city towards a greener and more sustainable city, preserving the protection of wooded and sustainable areas such as Bellver, El Carnatge and Son Quint”, said Pastor.

This contract is based on the Palma Verda 2030 Plan, which consists of the following major strategic points:

  • to improve the quantity and quality of public green with the planting of 10,000 trees
  • to renaturalize and enable existing non-intervening residual spaces and increase their biodiversity, a strategy that has already begun. Improving road greenery, studying the needs and promoting the prioritization of vegetation, making it compatible with accessibility.
  • to enhance connectivity between parks and gardens and natural parks with green corridors, so that the city is united by its outdoor nature.
  • to deepen citizen participation activities which involve training and awareness. Boost of promotion uses of green areas as healthy environments, place for leisure and rest.

35% more investment in the green areas, parks and trees of Palma

This contract will improve the maintenance of the 554 green areas that Palma currently has and that makes up an area of ​​1,975,040 square meters. Palma has more than 60,000 trees located in green areas and streets and a total of 173 children’s play areas, 6,974 benches and 297,849 square meters of grass.

The contracts that have been awarded today represent 35% more investment than the previous one. Specifically, the planned investments in the different green areas and trees of the so-called tree alignments is quantified at 7.8 million euros, which is an increase of 6.6 million euros over the contract that was made in 2010.

In this regard, it is expected that from January 2021 will begin the planting of 2,000 trees that could not be replaced during the years when the contract was extended.

An important investment is also planned to update the gardens and their infrastructures, which require an investment to keep up to date in terms of regulations, network renovation and garden improvement.

The new contracts will also mean an increase in staff of around 40 people more than in the previous contract.
