The German city of Bonn has plans for a new sustainable way of transportation in the upcoming years – a cable car. Mayor of Bonn Katja Dörner met Julia Höller from GRÜNE NRW to discuss the project.

Mayor Dörner stated on social media: When did you have the “wow moment” about the cable car in Bonn? – I chatted with Julia Höller yesterday about the many advantages of the cable car as a public transport project – in any case, we are both big fans.

Once a car-oriented metropolis, Bonn has taken major steps to transform itself into a place with cleaner air and less noise. At the same time, it continues to grow in terms of population and businesses, which is why more transport needs can be  expected in the future. To address this issue, Bonn is set to become the first city in Germany where the cable car will be integrated into local public transportation as a sustainable mode of transportation.

According to projections, 15.000 passengers are expected to use the cable car on a daily basis once it is up and running. Preliminary feasibility study conducted in 2017 proved that the project was technically and economically feasible. In the upcoming period, Bonn City Council is expected to decide on further steps regarding the implementation of the project.

First cable car plans in this German city date back to 1950 and Bonn’s Venusberg. The idea didn’t not come true at the time but was recently reborn as a way to tackle traffic congestion and inadequate infrastructure. This prompted Bonn to come up with a solution which has already been implemented in many cities around the world.

Cable cars provide passengers with a high level of comfort and, when compared to other modes of transportation, are considered durable, low-noise, and low-emission. They also require less energy and are generally inexpensive to construct.

In addition to strengthening existing public transport connections, the Bonn’s cable car could also grow to become the city’s new tourist attraction offering breathtaking views over the Rhine and making other tourist attractions easier to reach.
