2.2 million euros have been allocated for the road reconstruction in 2022 in Latvian towns Gulbene, Salacgriva, Aluksne, Madona, Valka and Smiltene. The funding is provided thanks to the budget program “Maintenance and Restoration of State Highway”.

Minister of Transport, Talis Linkaits, pointed out that municipal transitways are an important part of the highway network, therefore an opportunity has been created to support municipal applications for significant transit reconstruction.

Limbaži Municipality Council has been granted with over 112 000 euros in co-financing the development of a construction project for a bridge over Salaca on Tallinn Highway in Salacgriva. The state budget co-financing will cover 70% of the total costs.

In deciding which projects to support, several criteria were taken into account, including the total traffic intensity, freight traffic intensity, street conditions, and land availability for the project’s implementation. Other technical and practicality concerns were taken into consideration as well.

The municipal funding will be received after the conclusion of a cooperation agreement with the VSIA, Latvian State Road Company. Planned activities from the project such as design and construction work, should be covered by the allocated funds.

Starting from 2022, the tenders for the daily maintenance of state roads will be opened thanks to the initiative of the Ministry of Transport approved by the government. Providers of public road maintenance services will be selected through a tender as well. Similar practices exist in municipal road management in other countries.
