For the second year in a row, Munich’s most popular event, Oktoberfest, has been cancelled due to the Covid pandemic. However, this year, approximately 50 local restaurants and pubs in Munich are keeping the tradition alive through the unofficial, low-key, alternative Oktoberfest.

All the participating restaurants are decorated in the style of the famous tents that are set up at the Theresienwiese and traditional music is being played all day. Seasonal beer is served and serversl and attendees, will likely don the traditional lederhosen and dirndl, all typical of the festival.

Mayor of Munich Dieter Reiter stated: “I would definitely like it to keep it at two Wiesn cancellations during my term of office. However, it must be ensured that it is a safe Wiesn”.

Mayor Reiter also said that, when Oktoberfest hopefully returns in 2022, Coronavirus measures will still apply and all those without the vaccination won’t be able to participate.

The alternative Oktoberfest will run through October 3 and online Wiesn tours have been set up to allow fans to learn more about and remain connected to the event.
