Budapest shines bright with solar power programme
Budapest is preparing its solar power programme as part of broader efforts to move towards renewable sources of energy.
Mayor of Budapest Gergely Karácsony stressed the importance of removing bureaucratic obstacles to implementation of solar projects and tapping Budapest’s full potential.
Speaking at the opening of the Budapest Solar Conference, he pointed out that, according to a poll, more than 90% of residents are against the government’s ban on solar panels.
Karácsony announced Budapest plans to help residents to install solar panels on the roofs of their buildings as soon as regulatory obstacles are removed.
He noted that a register of solar potential of roofs in Budapest has been completed and added that the city is preparing to set up an agency to support solar projects.
“We help the people of Budapest to play their part in the energy transition that must come, otherwise we will be in big trouble,” Karácsony concluded.
City authorities pointed out that the new register allows residents to see which buildings are suitable for installation of solar panels and to what extent.
According to estimates, the solar power potential of Budapest’s roofs stands at approximately 5,000 MW. City authorities reminded that roughly 150 MW has been installed and added that the figure needs to reach 1,500 by 2030 to achieve climate targets.
