Strasbourg and Schiltigheim join forces to build a sustainable transport system
Strasbourg and its suburb Schiltigheim have announced the north tram project to improve connectivity and limit pollution.
Mayor of Strasbourg Jeanne Barseghian pointed out that extension of the tram network is “an incredible lever for urban transformation.”
She stressed that the north tram project is “the most emblematic of this mandate due to its ambition” and will help Strasbourg to become more resilient and better adapted to climate change.
City authorities noted that the project aims to limit pollution and improve quality of life in Strasbourg.
As part of the project, Haguenau Square will be transformed into a park that will cover 16 hectares, which will make the city greener, improve air quality and limit the heat island effect, among other.
Barseghian noted that traffic on Vosges Avenue, one of the most polluted parts of the city, will be diverted to make room for trams, which will leave more room to plant new trees and build homes.
City authorities pointed out that the project includes expansion of pedestrian and cycling areas, which is in line with Strasbourg’s urban development plans.
Schiltigheim authorities noted that the project will limit car access, but stressed that the project will not leave any residents stranded and concluded that solutions will be found for each resident.
