Saint-Étienne implements urban development project
Saint-Étienne has implemented an urban development project aimed at improving mobility, energy efficiency and quality of life in the city.
Headed by Mayor of Saint-Étienne Gaël Perdriau, city authorities pointed out that Buffon Street has been modernised to improve traffic safety around the Honoré d’Urfé School Complex.
As part of the project, pedestrian areas have been expanded and the city replaced old street lights with LED lighting.
In addition, new cycling paths were built and connected to existing infrastructure and the area was made greener with the addition of new trees and other vegetation.
City authorities stressed the importance of improving safety around the school complex, which is why a speed limit of 30 km/h was introduced and areas for pedestrians and cyclists expanded.
Besides the speed limit, city authorities installed speed bumps and a video surveillance system to improve traffic safety.
Saint-Étienne reminded that the street previously did not have any trees and noted that the planting of 13 trees required the construction of a new drainage system to manage surface runoff.
New vegetation will limit the heat island effect and make life in the area more pleasant on sunny days, while newly installed LED lighting will lower power consumption and help to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
As part of urban development plans, city authorities noted that 28 new housing units will be built in the area and local green areas will be redeveloped.
