Malmö launches consultation on Coastal Protection Strategy

Malmö has invited residents and local authorities and organisations to take part in the consultation process on the Coastal Protection Strategy.

Headed by Mayor of Malmö Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, the city reminded that it has been working on its Coastal Protection Strategy since the spring of 2021.

City authorities invited interested parties to submit their comments and take part in the consultation process which ends in March next year.

The strategy includes Malmö’s environmental views and assessment of flood risks as well as how the risks should be handled in physical planning.

The strategy also details how Malmö’s existing buildings are to be protected and how the city can continue to develop as a coastal city in a changing climate.

City authorities pointed out that the strategy addresses the issue of distribution of responsibility for implementation of protective measures, noting that real estate owners are responsible for protecting their buildings according to regulations in effect.

Malmö stressed that it is fulfilling its obligations as property owner and operator and added that the draft Coastal Protection Strategy was approved earlier in December.

After the consultation process, city authorities will present the suggestions as part of a report that will be used to identify ambiguities and issues, and improve the strategy.
