Malmö prepares to open new library in Rosengård neighbourhood
Malmö is building a new library in Rosengård neighbourhood that will be twice as large as the old one.
Under Mayor of Malmö Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, the city announced the new library would open at the start of March next year and noted that authorities will start the move on 1 December this year.
Head of the library Maria Roijer pointed out that the old library was too small and the building was in poor condition, stressing that she is looking forward to the opening of the new library.
She reminded that the work on the new library started in 2019, when city authorities decided to demolish the old library and build a new, larger one in its place.
The new library will have total surface area of approximately 2,000 square metres, which will provide enough room for visitors to use the library and address the issue of overcrowding.
“There will be more room for everyone… more seating, study and computer places, and more space for reading,” Roijer pointed out and added that young people will have one floor all to themselves.
She noted that the ground floor of new library will be tailored to shorter stays, while the upper two floors will be for longer stays. The first floor will be for children and young people and the second one will be easily adapted for different events and activities.
Roijer concluded that the library will be closed from 16 January to reopening on 1 March.
