Barcelona to repurpose unused buildings to transform former industrial park

Barcelona presented plans to repurpose unused industrial buildings as part of a project to transform the Tres Xemeneies industrial park.

Headed by Mayor of Barcelona Ada Colau, city authorities stressed that the move would unlock urban potential of the industrial park.

According to the proposal, Barcelona would repurpose the land in question to allow construction of office buildings, which would allow the private owner of two empty buildings there to repurpose them.

Under the spatial plan in effect, the buildings in question can only be used by utility companies to provide essential services such as natural gas and water supply, among other.

City authorities pointed out that repurposing the land would increase its value from the current EUR 10.5 million or so to approximately 29 million.

Barcelona stressed that the owner of the land would be allowed to invest into the unused buildings and transform them into offices, pointing out that the buildings have been empty since 2012.

In exchange, the city would get one building where it would move the Security and Emergency Coordination Centre (CECOR) as well as a plot of land to build a park and make the area greener.

Barcelona pointed out that it is still negotiating the deal and added that projects to make the industrial park safer in the meantime are underway.

City authorities concluded that redevelopment of the industrial park would be carried out by private companies.
