Budapest held a three-day workshop on the creation of neighbourhoods with a positive energy balance.

Under Mayor of Budapest Gergely Karácsony, the city administration invited colleagues from Amsterdam and Bilbao to help develop and assess its plans.

Budapest pointed out that Amsterdam and Bilbao already built positive energy neighbourhoods, stressing the importance of following in their footsteps.

Besides Budapest, Amsterdam and Bilbao, cities that took part in the workshop include Bratislava, Copenhagen, Krakow, Matosinhos and Riga.

Budapest designated an area for the planned positive energy neighbourhood project, noting that experts are assessing the area to see whether it is suitable.

As part of the workshop, attendants visited Budapest’s passive houses in the 13th district that tap geothermal energy, boast heat recovery ventilation, floor heating and ceiling cooling, among other.

The project recently won the Budapest Architectural Award, with city authorities pointing out that the water purification system in the local artificial lake is chemical-free and the area boasts many newly planted trees.

Head architect Zoltán Erő and Deputy Mayor of the 13th district Gergely Csiga presented innovative solutions implemented in Budapest to workshop attendants.

City authorities concluded that Budapest will seek to improve cooperation with other cities and coordinate environmental objectives, especially those focused on energy.
